Continuation of the movie Guns, Germs, and Steel
Today we continued to watch the movie Guns, Germs, and Steel. 13,000 years ago the ice age was over. The world had become wetter and warmer. 13,000 years ago there were more plants and trees. The new guineans were on the move trying to find animals and food. Also shelters to live in. When the seasons change they move to a different river/valley to find new foods. In Papa New Guinea it is hard to find animals to kill for food. To catch animals there you need skill. You also have to be pretty smart to be a hunter. You have to have patience, because it takes time to kill the animals. Gathering is also another thing they do to find food. The gathering is usually done by women. The main food they gather is sago. It is turned into dough then cooked. This is a much more productive food to gather. You have to cut the tree, dig into the roots and the tree and get the sago. One tree has 3/4 pounds of sago. It takes 2/3 days to get. Sago can't be stored for a long time. The middle east has different plants. They have wheats and barley. Theses plants are more nutritious then sago. Then a drought occurred and people were forced to travel farther for food.
