Today we skyped with Sarah our friend from Egypt. It was really cool to ask her all these questions and her being able to answer.

Thursday, February 24, 2011

Today in class we helped Mr. Schick learn how to use skype and we skyped with Sarah for a little. She didn't see to thrilled to talk to us but lets hope we get to talk to her tomorrow.

Do you help protest?
Are you scared you will get arrested when you are protesting?
Does your family feel the same way about Hosni Mubarak?
What part of Egypt are you from?
Is there anything else you would like to do to change Egypt?
Do you think things will change dramatically in Egypt with a new leader?
Are you parents involved with the protesting?
How did you find out about the revolution?
How are you dealing with this whole citation right now?
Did you know the leader of all the revolutions?

Today most of the students performed their raps that they made up about Egypt. I performed my rap and I also had to sing it while saying it. We also watched the video of Gigi's Revolution. She is trying to kick the leader out while her family is arguing with her about that she is not american and that Egypt is her home town. Almost everyone in the entire country is trying to kick the leader out.

Egypt Rap

I'm glad you made it down the Nile River
How's the desert, is it cold or warm weather
I haven't been there in awhile
The pyramids are good, better than ever
Saw the mummies, gods, and pharaohs
The last time I saw them it has been awhile
They gave me tips on mummification
I was told to wash off the body
It turned out not as bad as I expected
It made me happier than ever
So I go back to Egypt all the time
Gods and goddesses are more important than ever
Some make up creation, food and protection
Egyptians believed pharaohs were gods
They built pyramids as tombs for themself
So I go back to Egypt all the time

Gods and Goddesses of Ancient Egypt

The ancient Egyptians believed in many different gods and goddesses. Each one with their own role to play in maintaining peace and harmony across the land. Some gods and goddesses participated in creation, some brought the flood every year, some offered protection, and some took care of people after they died. Others were either local gods who represented towns, or minor gods who represented plants or animals. The ancient Egyptians believed that it was important to recognize and worship these gods and goddesses so that life continued smoothly. Some god's names are Ra the God of Sun, Hathor the God of Music, Nut the God of the Sky, and Thoth the God of Wisdom.

Facts on Egyptian Mummification

Mummification is the preservation of a body. It can be either animal or human. They can be preserved in three different ways. They can be preserved wet, frozen, or dried. It can be a natural process or it may be deliberately achieved. By eliminating moisture, you have eliminated the source of decay. They dried the body by using a salt mixture called natron. Natron is a natural substance that is found in abundance along the Nile river. They natron is made up of four different types of salts. Sodium carbonate, sodium bicarbonate, sodium chloride, and sodium sulfate. The sodium carbonate works as a drying agent, drawing the water out of the body. http://egyptancient.org/Ancient_Egypt_Mummies1.jpg<iframe title="YouTube video player" width="640" height="390" src="http://www.youtube.com/embed/-MQ5dL9cQX0" frameborder="0" allowfullscreen></iframe>

Analyze Jared Diamond's theory of geographic luck.

C. Jared Diamond was very lucky. He went to Papua New Guinea to bird watch. But when he got there he discovered people with an interesting background. He found people that are different from any other people. You may think that they don’t have a lot but they really do. They have some really good resources of food and warmth.

It is very hard to find animals in Papua New Guinea that can be used for work and to kill for food. There are 14 different animals that can be domesticated but Papua New Guinea doesn’t have any of them, except a pig. When the seasons change they move to a new and different rive to find animals for food. The gathering for food is usually done by women. Sago is a big thing in New Guinea. Sago isn’t a very good food to have a big surplus of food. It can’t be stored for a long time but it good while it lasts. After the Stone Age people began becoming farmers. New Guinean farmers are no less talented than any other farmer.

From this day New Guinea still eats sago but has changed a lot. Their economy has increasing fast. They have a high economy but low employment rate. They have a lot of imports and exports. Gold and silver are to big ones. Papua New Guinea is coming along. They don’t have all of the technology that we do but they still find things to get around life with. They have big domesticated animals to use as a plow and as human work. New Guinea is no different than us. They still have resources for food and for warmth. They just don’t understand why they aren’t like us. Why do you white men have so much cargo and we New Guineas have so little? We have good technology but they do to.

In class today we talked about how Papua New Guinea has changed. We also went over a power point on Papua New Guinea. Tomorrow we have a test so we reviewed over some notes of what will be on the test. After we take the test tomorrow we will start working on Egypt on Friday. I am very excited to learn about Egypt. Papua New Guineas economy is the best right now. Their economy is really increasing at a fast rate. Some imports and exports are gold silver oil copper coffee coca  food machinery chemicals and technology.

Today in class we had a sub. The sub was Mr. Sutton. We finished watching the movie and got into our groups and starting working on our power point, prezi or paragraph. My group finished in class. The class was very respectful of the sub and worked well in their groups.

Just a refresher from last class the 14 domesticable animals are: Goats, Sheep, Pigs, Cows, Horses, Donkeys, Bactrian Camels, Arabian Camels, Water Buffalo, Lamas, Rain Deer, Yax, Mithens, and Bali Cattle. You can never domesticate an elephant. Lamas are the only animal South America has for domestication. Asia North Africa are where the other animals come from. New guinea never developed new technology. New guinea spends to much time on feeding their selves. They don’t die of heart attacks or liver problems. They have a happy life but compared to us they don’t. 100 million cattle in the United States  alone. 20 million ton of wheat a year.

In the middle of the drought people began making their own food. People bring the resources back with them. People in Papa New Guinea still eat sago to this day. Stone age people of the middle east are becoming farmers. They are changing the nature of the crops around them. In china they grow rice. New guinea farmers are not any less talented then other farmers. They kill animals not only for meat but also for milk. They also use their hair for warmth. They will never domesticated an elephant. Horses and ox can be used as a plow. Using animals as a plow is the most powerful machine in the planet. This also allows farmers to feed and grow more food. In Papa New Guinea they couldn't use animals as plows because they didn't have any powerful animals. New guineans only have pigs.
  1. Goats
  2. Sheep
  3. Pig
  1. Cows
  1. Horses
  1. Donkeys

Continuation of the movie Guns, Germs, and Steel

Today we continued to watch the movie Guns, Germs, and Steel. 13,000 years ago the ice age was over. The world had become wetter and warmer. 13,000 years ago there were more plants and trees. The new guineans were on the move trying to find animals and food. Also shelters to live in. When the seasons change they move to a different river/valley to find new foods. In Papa New Guinea it is hard to find animals to kill for food. To catch animals there you need skill. You also have to be pretty smart to be a hunter. You have to have patience, because it takes time to kill the animals. Gathering is also another thing they do to find food. The gathering is usually done by women. The main food they gather is sago. It is turned into dough then cooked. This is a much more productive food to gather. You have to cut the tree, dig into the roots and the tree and get the sago. One tree has 3/4 pounds of sago. It takes 2/3 days to get. Sago can't be stored for a long time. The middle east has different plants. They have wheats and barley. Theses plants are more nutritious then sago. Then a drought occurred and people were forced to travel farther for food.
